A rubbish truck caught on fire in central Auckland today sending smoke billowing across the area.

The Fire Service were at the scene, at the bottom of Cook and Union streets, for around 20 minutes trying to extinguish the blaze.

A Fire Service spokesman said the cause was not yet known but because the truck was off the road it caused minimal disruption to traffic in the area.
