Police are stunned that the driver of a stolen vehicle found wrapped around a traffic light in Auckland today has walked away from the crash.

The metallic green Nissan Sunny was found by a security guard at the intersection of College Rd and Stonefields Ave in Mt Wellington around 3.30am on Thursday.

Police say it is likely the driver was trapped and helped from the car. The only evidence left at the scene was blood.

It is not known how many people were in the vehicle, but police suspect it was only the driver.

"If there was anyone in the front passenger seat they wouldn't have survived, it's just not possible," Constable Gerard Ryan of the Ponsonby Serious Crash Unit said.

"How the driver has got out and been able to run, or get out of it at all is amazing. To look at it you think 'how did anyone survive?'"

The bottom of the car hit the traffic light side-on and wrapped itself around the pole at a 90-degree angle.

The pole ended up next to the front passenger seat.

It is not known what lead to the crash as police weren't following the vehicle.

The car was stolen from Otahuhu some time between 3am and 3.30am.

Anyone who saw the car in Mt Wellington or Otahuhu early this morning or has any other information can call the Ponsonby Serious Crash Unit on 09 302 6400.
