LATEST: Tow trucks have removed a car that is believed to have rolled into the crater of Mt Eden over night.
The car, which had First Security branding on it, was severely damaged.
Police had no reports of the incident, but councillor Cathy Casey said she thought the vehicle was unoccupied when it rolled into the crater just after midnight.
Two tow trucks were called to remove the car shortly before midday.
A council spokeswoman said the summit was closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians while the car was being removed.
She said the council was working with local iwi and archaeologists to ensure the site wasn't damaged.
First Security could not be reached for comment.
