A 75-year-old woman was assaulted as she lay in her bed and left with serious injuries after what police have called a ''despicable'' attack.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur, of Counties Manukau CIB, said the woman was asleep in her home in Pakuranga on Sunday night when a person entered her home at 2.30am.
She was violently attacked and left with serious injuries including a broken nose, broken collarbone and facial bruising.
''[It was] quite a despicable assault on an elderly lady,'' he said.
The woman was still in hospital this week.
A 17-year-old has since been charged with burglary, aggravated wounding, wounding with intent, and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Police are seeking a second person in relation to the incident.
No further details were available last night.
