A power transformer on the North Shore was doused by fire fighters today after catching fire.

The transformer, near Triton Dr and Carnaveral Dr, Mairangi Bay, caught light about 12.38pm.

A fire service spokesman said fire fighters "lightly sprayed" the transformer until Vector arrived to shut off the power.

A Vector spokeswoman said a low voltage frame inside the transformer caught fire. She said it was suspected a possum may have been inside.

Power is expected to be out in the light commerical area for most of the afternoon.
