SUDDEN STOP: This ute came to rest in a hedge when it crashed off an Auckland motorway late this afternoon.

The driver of a ute had to be cut out of his vehicle after he veered off an Auckland motorway and came to a rest upside down in a hedge today.

Firefighters were called to State Highway 1, across the road from the Drury off-ramp at 4pm. There were initial reports of the vehicle being on fire.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance in a serious condition and traffic was delayed until the scene was cleared about 6pm.

Police were unsure what caused the crash, but said there was only one vehicle involved
