A 59-year-old man needed surgery on his head after being struck with a piece of wood during an aggravated burglary earlier today.
The man was asleep at his Manurewa home when three offenders broke in and attacked him, before stealing his wallet and mobile phone.
A police spokeswoman said the trio then fled the scene.
Nothing else from the property appeared to have been stolen.
The man suffered a large cut on his forehead and was taken to Middlemore Hospital.
Police hope to speak with him either today or tomorrow depending on how he recovers.
No description of the offenders was available.
