The husband of a woman killed after their vehicle collided with a police car is back home after spending most of yesterday in hospital.
Sione and Liku Onesi were heading to church yesterday morning when the accident happened on Ormiston Rd, Otara.
The couple were taken to Middlemore Hospital but Liku, a mother of four, died in the back of the ambulance.
Sione sustained arm injuries and was discharged from hospital last night.
The couple's extended family and friends were gathering at their Otara home today, many dressed in black, awaiting the return of Liku's body.
The family asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.
The police sergeant involved in the crash was on his way to a break-in where the offenders were still on the scene and had activated his siren and lights.
Inspector Gary Davies has been tasked with investigating the crash.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority will also investigate.
Reverend Vaikoloa Kilikiti was on his way in to the Otara Tongan Methodist Church when he recognised his sister's damaged vehicle just metres away.
Kilikiti said he was "heartbroken" when he learned Liku had died.
Counties Manukau police urged anyone who witnessed the crash to call 09 261 1300.
