LATEST: The navy will use sonar equipment during the search today for a paddle boarder missing at Takapuna Beach.

The man, in his early 50s, entered the water at the northern end of the beach on Wednesday afternoon but he didn't return and his family alerted police.

His board was found by the police launch Deodar near where he entered the water.

Police said an extensive shoreline and sea search failed to find any sign of the missing man and his family were "extremely concerned".

A police spokesman said the navy would carry out a grid search about 1km off the beach today.

The police dive squad was expected to arrive at the beach around midday.

Victim Support was assisting the man's family.

The man is Caucasian, 188 cm tall, of thin, muscular build, with short greyish hair.

Police want anyone with information to call North Shore police on 09 477 5000.
