Paddleboarder to be farewelled
An Auckland man who died while paddleboarding off Takapuna Beach last week will be farewelled on Friday.
Mark Thomas went missing last Wednesday afternoon after entering the water at the northern end of Takapuna Beach. His family alerted police who found his board near where he entered the water.
Poor visibility initially hampered the search for Thomas.
The 52-year-old's body was recovered on Sunday evening after a joint search by the NZ Navy and police, who used sonar equipment to find him. His body was located between Takapuna and Milford.
Thomas leaves behind his wife Tracey and two children Sam and Holly who, in a newspaper death notice, thanked him "for so many happy memories".
A service to farewell Thomas will be held at All Saints Chapel, Purewa Crematorium
in Meadowbank on Friday.
Police have referred the death to the coroner.
