The world’s oldest flash mob is seeking Zimmer frames so some of its lead dancers can carry on hip hopping.

The grpup, made up of about 80 Waiheke Island residents aged between 65 and 95, took downtown Auckland by storm on August 9 and has plans for another flash mob performance.

But organiser Billie Jordan said some of the more senior members of the group were feeling the effects of the dance training.

‘‘Due to their age, some of our more senior hip-hop dancers need the support of a mobility aid to ensure they can dance safely in public without the risk of being accidently knocked over by the other dancers.

''Instead of glamorous costumes and dance shoes, we need Zimmer frames and wheelchairs."

The mob needs two Zimmer frames with handbrakes and two wheelchairs.

The group meets every Monday to practise routines for future flash mob opportunities. The weekly $1 fee pays for hire of a hall and administration costs.

Jordan said despite the need for the Zimmer frames, the group aimed to show that elderly people were still able to take part in fun, active activities, normally reserved for younger generations.

‘‘A lot of people automatically presume that just because you’re a senior citizen you must be old-fashioned, feeble, unemployable, incapable of being independent, and can’t learn new things and don’t like doing any activity that is supposedly outside of your comfort zone.

‘‘Our aim is to address those misperceptions and prejudices in a light hearted and entertaining way."
