Arts festival line-up announced
Auckland's Southside Arts Festival has announced its biggest line up in its five year history, and that has got Auckland Mayor Len Brown all excited.
The month long festival, which was formerly known as the Manukau Festival of Arts, will feature internationally acclaimed hip hop dance crew ReQuest, Red Leap Theatre and Cult Couture among other acts when it kicks off on October 12.
The diverse programme of 44 art, fashion, theatre, music and comedy performances was released at an announcement at the Auckland Town Hall this evening. The festival is held at 12 locations throughout South Auckland.
Brown said the line-up shows the festival is fast-becoming a pivotal event on New Zealand's artistic calendar.
"The cultural wealth of talent within Auckland is truly remarkable and is unique to the region, you can't find it anywhere else in the world.
ReQuest dance crew leader and international celebrity choreographer Parris Goebel, who has worked with Jennifer Lopez, is the ambassador for the festival.
Brown said: "Having someone of Parris' calibre onboard shows that the festival is in good health and bigger and better than ever.''
Goebel said South Auckland is not recognised for its artistic talent, but she was hoping to find it in the Southside Gig event.
"Getting to see all the talent around New Zealand rolled into one is the best for me," she said.
"It's going to be a celebration of everything we have to offer as a creative country."
Goebel grew up in and is staunch supporter of culture and arts from south Auckland.
"It's bringing the beauty from the streets - there are so many things we see from south Auckland that we might not view as art," she said.
October 12 to November 11.
