A thief was pushed out the door of a butchery empty handed after attacking the female owner and trying to steal the cash register.

The offender tried to rob Quality Discount Butcher on Great South Rd, Manurewa, at 1.10pm on Friday.

A police spokeswoman said the man tried to steal the cash register and assaulted the owner when she intervened.

The thief pushed her to the ground and kicked her before two other people in the shop forced him out the door, she said.

The shop owner wasn't seriously hurt.

The offender left his glasses and a shoe behind.

Police will examine CCTV footage from the store in an attempt to identify the robber.
