Accused remanded in Tongan prison
The Tongan prisoner who is alleged to have killed New Zealand Police officer Kali Fungavaka has been remanded in prison until next Monday, Matangi Tonga reports.
Semisi Kalisitiane Manu appeared at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court in Tonga this morning where the case was adjourned until October 1.
Matangi Tonga Online reported that crown prosecutor Sione Sisifa requested the adjournment to allow for more time to review evidence and to decide on the next course of action.
Manu is alleged to have killed Fungavaka on August 17 at the Nuku'alofa Central Police Station while being kept as a detainee in the same cell.
Fungavaka had been arrested for drunkenness that night and while detained in police custody, received fatal injuries.
He died on August 23 at Vaiola Hospital.
Two policemen Salesi Maile and Fatai Faletau, who are each charged with common assault of Kali Fungavaka, are out on bail and are also scheduled to appear next Monday.
