A man was rescued early today after jumping to safety when his boat caught fire in the Hauraki Gulf.
Maritime police were alerted to the blaze at Shark Bay, Ponui Island, about 4.30am, and transported firefighters to the scene.
A police spokesman said the boat was burnt to the water line and sinking when they arrived.
The 48-year-old man who had been on board the boat when the fire started had jumped to safety and was later rescued by police from the shore.
He suffered minor injuries.
The boat sunk and has not been recovered.
The spokesman said it appeared the fire started in the galley of the boat and "spread rapidly through the vessel".
