Controversial Auckland blogger Cameron Slater is hoping to return tabloid newspaper Truth to its former glory, after being appointed editor today.

Slater, who runs the Whale Oil blog, will start in the role this afternoon.

He replaces outgoing editor Joseph Lose, whose departure was "amicable", according to a staff member at the publication.

Slater, who was convicted in 2010 of identifying several high-profile New Zealanders protected by name suppression orders, said he was looking to return the paper, owned by Matthew Horton and David Crow, to its former glory.

His first edition in charge will be on sale from next Thursday.

He said he hopes to make "incremental changes" to the paper which has a printing run of around 16,000 copies a week.

"We've got a project that will be getting underway, basically today, that will look at revitalising the Truth," he said.

"It's a focus on the pedigree of the past and moving forward by looking backwards. Truth was known as a hard-hitting, investigative journal and we're going to return it to that."

The paper said in a statement today that it would launch a 24-hour website in coming months.

Slater plans on doing "things a little bit differently".

"We're also going to look at expanding the online presence of the outlet and leveraging off existing relationships that I have."

Slater was adamant he would succeed in the role.

"Of course I'm up to the job ... it's a challenge and we've just got to get on with it," he said.

Slater has been an outspoken advocate of name suppression law reform, claiming the secrecy protection is given far too easily by the courts, particularly to politicians, sports stars and media celebrities.

In September 2010, he was convicted of eight counts of breaching name suppression orders and one count of identifying a victim in a sex case in his Whale Oil blog.
