The army has invaded Army Bay in Whangaparaoa.

As part of Exercise Pae Tata, an infantry company from 1 Infantry Regiment have used Australian landing craft to come ashore at the popular beach in Shakespear Regional Park, north of Auckland.

Their amphibious landing hit the beaches from the Australian landing ship HMAS Tobruk, supported by New Zealand's HMNZ ships Manawanui and Taupo, as well as the Air Force.

The Army Bay landings were a rehearsal for a bigger landing next week on Great Barrier Island.

Army Bay gets its name from the large military exercise area on the northern side of Shakespear Park.
