Waterfront countdown to Christmas
Award-winning waterfront space Wynyard Quarter will become a living breathing advent calendar for the month of December.
Unlike the disappointing chocolate versions, this larger-than-life instillation will turn the area into a place full of Christmas surprises.
A range of businesses associated with the area will have their own windows, created by artists, school kids or customers, that will be revealed one-by-one in the lead up to Christmas Day.
Each space is three by three metres square, and will be installed on the steel structure called The Gantry, sitting alongside the base for the Auckland City Mission Christmas Campaign, Angel Wings.
The Gantry will also be a viewing area, with lifts and stair access, as each window opens in the early evening every night up until December 25.
"It's a gift from Auckland to Aucklanders and I encourage everyone to come down and see what will be a magnificent artistic creation and to pause and reflect on what Christmas means to them and how they can give back to those less fortunate," said Waterfront Auckland chairman Bob Harvey.
"It's also a great illustration of what can be achieved through strong partnerships between the public and private sector for the benefit of the greater public good."
On one of the days in December, a window will reveal a blown-up image of an artwork by Dick Frizzell. The work will then be auctioned with proceeds going to the Auckland City Mission.
"Community is everything when it comes to helping out people in need and the idea of bringing together a raft of players in a public project for everyone to enjoy and be part of is just great," said Diane Robertson of the Auckland City Mission.
The advent calendar will be part of a range of entertainment happening at Wynyard Quarter, including music, outdoor cinema and other activities.
It will also be a key location in the central city Christmas Trail, which also features the Telecom Foundation Christmas Tree in Victoria Park and the Franklin Road lights.
