An Auckland man shot in the leg in an armed invasion last week has spoken for the first time of his ordeal.

John Glozier, also known as David John Blaikie, suffered serious injuries in the shooting on Hayr Rd, Three Kings, about 10pm on November 13.

He underwent surgery on his right knee a day later at Auckland City Hospital and said he was recovering well.

"I was trying to stop it happening, it happened very quickly," Glozier said of the attack.

He said he "had no idea" what provoked the shooting and didn't recognise his attackers.

The two men involved are still on the run from police but Glozier's car, which was stolen on the night, has since been recovered.

"We've been told there were two offenders, possibly Maori or Polynesian in their 20s or 30s, who were obviously prepared to use the firearm they had with them," Detective Sergeant Marcia Murray said last week.

"It's possible this incident was gang related and that the victim was deliberately targeted although we are not aware of any connections between Wednesday night's shooting and other incidents involving firearms in the city recently."

The boxing promoter's 1996 silver BMW saloon, registration BZL46, was recovered on Saturday night but police wouldn't say where.

Glozier has had several run-ins with the law and in 2001 was found guilty of conspiring to import cocaine with a street value in excess of $800,000.

Glozier, who was sentenced under the name Blaikie, appealed his five-year sentence but it was dismissed.

At the time, he was already serving two years and 10 months jail for possession of methamphetamine for supply.
