Dry-cleaning among new car park services
Dry-cleaning pick up and drop-off services, as well as a car wash and valet, are set to be introduced to Auckland Transport car parks as the council looks to compete with commercial operators offering similar services.
The plan comes after the council this month increased the cost of on-street parking in central Auckland and made motorists pay until 10pm - an extra four hours - in an attempt to make them use parking buildings.
The service will be introduced at Downtown car park, on the corner of Lower Hobson St and Customs St West, in the next month.
Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan said the trial would make money rather than cost the organisation anything.
"Under a commercial arrangement AT will be leasing space to a private operator. That contract is still to be formally signed."
Hannan said the car wash and valet operation would take eight spaces near the entrance to the car park.
Auckland Transport wanted to make their car parking buildings "more than just somewhere to leave your vehicle".
"That's why we're looking at adding these and other services."
The Auckland Transport board agenda for November said an evaluation of customer feedback and service performance will be undertaken to monitor the success of the services before it is expanded elsewhere.
