Bakery infested with cockroaches
A West Auckland bakery was shut down for two days when Auckland Council found a ''severe'' cockroach infestation.
Kong Hour and You Sim Be - licensees of the Mekong Hot Bread Shop in Henderson - appeared in Waitakere District Court last week charged with breaching food hygiene regulations and will reappear there for sentencing next month.
A council environmental health officer made an unannounced visit to the Bruce McLaren Rd shop on July 2 and found it infested with cockroaches and uncovered further ''untidy conditions''.
The business was given an E-grade hygiene rating - the lowest possible - and shut down for two days for exterminators to be called in.
After a later inspection, the grading was adjusted to B, indicating a ''good level of compliance''.
Another Henderson restaurant - Gengy's - was also snapped by council officials who found a large amount of cockroaches living under a fridge in February.
Part-owner Jaysh Kumar and Gengy's Investments Ltd were fined $700 and $750 respectively.
The Westgate Foodhall at Westgate Shopping Centre also joined West Auckland's hall of shame when it was slapped with an E rating and ordered to close immediately in May 2011 after a routine inspection.
The Waitakere District Court heard how cockroach faeces and dead roaches "littered the floor" of the "untidy" and "dirty" food hall.
Foodhall owner Mohammed Salem was fined $2000 after admitting two charges against him and his business.
Food outlets are visited by environmental health officers once a year at random but premises with a poor grading history are seen more frequently.
