'Sinister' attack sparks manhunt
Police have released a picture of the man they believe punched a woman in the face in a "cowardly attack" in West Auckland.
Noreen Roudin, 26, was followed by her attacker through the walkway leading towards Newham Pl after she got off a train at the Sunnyvale train station about 7.40pm Friday.
Police said the man grabbed Roudin and punched her in the face in an attempt to get her on the ground.
"The female resisted the assault by kicking and punching the male and finally scratching his face," Detective Sergeant Litherland said.
"In a gutsy display of courage, the victim was able to repel what was clearly premeditated and sinister attack."
Police said the man ran towards the train station and his victim was left bruised and shaken.
The attacker is likely to have suffered scratch marks to his face, police said.
The man was described as a skinny Pacific Island or Indian in his late 20s or early 30s with short black hair.
He was wearing a long-sleeved grey sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes.
Anyone who saw the man around the train station can call police on 09 839 0627 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
