Robbers armed with hammers have stolen jewellery worth thousands of dollars in a daylight heist.
A police spokeswoman said three, or possible four offenders, entered Partridge Jewellers on Broadway in Newmarket around 11am.
"The offenders were carrying hammers and have come in and smashed up displays," she said.
"This was a fairly brazen act in a very busy shopping precinct during a busy time of the day."
The thieves fled with thousands of dollars worth of jewellery including high-end watches.
It is not known if they fled on foot or got into a car.
The store manager, two assistants and three customers were in the shop at the time of the robbery.
The spokeswoman said one assistant snuck out of the shop when she saw the offenders enter and went to a neighbouring shop where she called police.
A worker at the shop today refused to comment.
The police spokeswoman said it was disappointing that despite dozens of people witnessing the robbery, no-one phoned police or tried to help.
"A lot of people were around watching, but there didn't seem to be any thoughts to call police."
She said it didn't appear witnesses had been "particularly observant" either.
Police spoke to the Partridge staff and customers in the shop at the time and were completing a scene examination.
