Fears for occupants in sleepout fire
Firefighters feared there were people inside a sleepout that caught fire in Waiuku this morning.
Crews were called to the blaze in Whiriwhiri Rd at 8.56am.
Fire service spokesman Colin Underdown said initial reports were that people were trapped inside the burning sleepout, but they were found safe and well.
The sleepout was "well involved" when firefighters arrived, Underdown said.
Three fire trucks and a tanker fought the blaze.
A fire safety officer would examine the scene today to determine how the fire started, Underdown said.
FIRE DESTROYS BIN COMPANY
Eighteen fire trucks fought a huge blaze at an Auckland bin hire firm in the early hours of this morning.
The Pink Bin Company on Grayson Ave in Papatoetoe, a 40m x 60m single-level recycling centre, was gutted in the blaze.
The fire was reported to emergency services at 12.57am.
A "third alarm" was put out, attracting crews from around the region and two units spent the night at the scene on standby.
Fire safety officers were expected to return to the property this morning to try to determine the cause.
