Best airport traffic times revealed
A survey has revealed what some Aucklanders would probably like to keep secret - the best times to get from the city to the airport.
Intelematics, the company behind the SUNA Traffic Channel, analysed travel times from the central city to the airport using Dominion Rd, the southwestern motorway and George Bolt Memorial Dr.
Early Sunday mornings are the best time to travel with the drive taking an average of 16 minutes.
During the week, the best time is 6am with the journey taking 18 minutes.
The same journey during the Friday evening peak took an average of 29 minutes, the slowest of the week.
Intelematics chief executive Adam Game said: "An extra five minutes can be critical given the other potential delays that can be encountered once arriving at the airport - it could be the difference between making or missing a flight."
And if you want to know what times to avoid - mornings and evenings are the peak travel times for weekday journeys, but travellers on the weekend are more likely to encounter delays during the middle of the day.
"The peak travel time on the weekend is between 12pm and 1pm, with that journey taking 20 minutes," he said.
"This is still faster than a weekday journey at this time, which takes 22 minutes on average."
In August, Intelematics analysed major city roads using speed and vehicle data from thousands of vehicles carrying GPS systems.
It found five of the 10 most congested spots in New Zealand were in Auckland.
