A truck and trailer which overturned near Otahuhu, blocking all of the north bound lanes of the southern motorway, has now been cleared.
Fire, police and ambulances were alerted to the incident at 2.40pm.
The crash took place between East Tamaki Rd and Princes St northbound and traffic had to be diverted through Manuaku.
The truck driver sustained minor injuries but no one else was hurt.
Police earlier urged motorists travelling south to concentrate and not to slow to look at the scene - there were several secondary crashes as a result of inattention.
Police said they expected rush hour traffic to be heavier than usual because of the crash.
