The Defence Force was called out to blow up a potential pipe bomb in West Auckland this morning.
The controlled explosion took place near a Holdens Rd property, understood to be Misty Valley Nursery.
Police were called at 10am and after alerting neighbours to potential danger, the scene was cleared by 11.40am.
A police spokesman said it may have been fireworks left over from Guy Fawkes but precautions had to be taken.
Now the item had been destroyed, he said it was unlikely they would be able to determine what it was.
The owner of the nursery declined to comment.
