A three-year-old boy was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool at Parakai Springs at the weekend.
He was following his mother around at a birthday party when she momentarily looked away, and when she turned back he was gone, Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman Emily King said.
She found him at the bottom of a pool in the outdoor complex and pulled him out.
He was unconscious but breathing when St John ambulance officers arrived at the pools on Saturday afternoon.
The toddler was flown by helicopter to Starship Children's Hospital in a critical condition but improved during the flight, King said.
The boy is now recovering and is in a stable condition, an Auckland City Hospital spokesperson said.
Last month a 40-year-old man collapsed and died at the complex, near Helensville. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and the death was referred to the coroner.
