Two children needed to be rescued by emergency services after being trapped in a lift on the 20th floor of an Auckland hotel.

Crowne Plaza duty manager Ben Sitti confirmed the children had been trapped for nearly 20 minutes.

Sitti said the children had set off the alarm inside the lift to alert staff.

"They're guests in the hotel," he said.

"We called Schindler already, which is the lift company, and a technician is on the way to free them."

Fire services were also called and freed the children within minutes.

It's not clear how old the children were.
