Man charged over Birkenhead stabbing
Police have charged a man after a brutal stabbing in Birkenhead left another fighting for his life in Auckland City Hospital.
A 36-year-old unemployed Auckland man appeared in the North Shore District Court on Saturday charged with common assault.
Police say they have not ruled out laying further charges.
The 25-year-old victim is still in critical condition after he was stabbed with a large knife in his upper right thigh during a fight outside a house in Palmerston Rd about 7pm last Thursday.
Police said the man had surgery and was placed in an induced coma to recover from his injuries.
Forensic teams have carried out investigations of the scene and police say enquiries into the circumstances of the stabbing will continue.
North Shore Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said the injured man was not yet well enough to talk to police.
