The identity of a man accused of kidnapping Rae Portman before she was killed will continue to be kept secret.

Portman, 33, went missing in Auckland in June and her body was found at the back of a rural Ardmore property in September.

The man - who is the second to be charged with kidnapping the 33-year-old - appeared at the Papakura District Court this morning, where Judge Sharon McAuslan continued his name suppression.

VICTIM: Rae "Bok" Portman.

The accused's lawyer Stuart Blake said the "threat and risk" to the man's safety was "real".

The man, understood to be from Auckland, has had his identity shrouded in secrecy and extensive suppression orders prevented his arrest from being reported.

He will reappear in court in January for a plea inquiry hearing.

MURDER ACCUSED: Paraire Te Awa has been charged with the murder of Rae Portman.

Portman's mother, Rebecca Norton, revealed at a press conference in September that her daughter was four months pregnant when she disappeared.

Before going missing from a Mt Albert motor lodge, Portman - known as "Bok" - dropped off her car at a mechanic.

After her family reported her missing on July 2 and made online appeals for information, her car was returned to her friend Kristina Le Noel.

Le Noel was later charged with stealing the car after allegedly selling it without the Portman family's permission.

Three other people were arrested while police traced Portman's whereabouts.

Brendon Wilson and Dean Addison are facing drugs charges, and Voi Marie King was accused of assaulting Portman, but the charge was later dropped.

Hamilton man Paraire Hori Te Awa - known as Friday - was charged with Portman's murder in November.

He appeared in court earlier this month and is due to reappear early next year.
