Hot-wire passenger attacks cop car

A man was arrested this morning for damaging an Auckland police vehicle after the hot-wired car he was travelling in was pulled over for a second time.

Earlier in the morning police had stopped the vehicle and removed its keys after the driver was found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit.

The car was then allegedly hot-wired by one of the passengers and later stopped by police again. The second driver was also found to be over the legal alcohol limit. It was at this point that another passenger decided to attack the police vehicle, officers claim.

In total, police identified five drivers on the motorway who had exceeded the legal alcohol limit and another who was driving under the influence of drugs.

In a written statement Auckland motorways police Sergeant Andrew Francis said he was dismayed by the choices made by some drivers who continued to drive under the influence of drink and drugs despite all the warnings.

He said a collision near Drury was caused by fatigue after the driver fell asleep and collided with the central crash barrier.
