A middle-aged woman reported missing by her family has returned to her Auckland home after four days.

Aihua Liu, 56, was last seen near her workplace at Dominion Rd, Mt Eden on Wednesday January 2.

On Saturday night police issued a media request for public sightings, as she had not accessed any bank accounts or made contact with her family since she was last seen.

She was not believed to be driving a vehicle either.

Police today reported she had returned home safely in Epsom. She did not give reasons for her disappearance, Sergeant Grant Harris said.

"We were concerned for her safety because we didn't have much information."

Harris said police were respecting her requests for privacy.

He said the situation was unusual. "We get a lot of missing youths, but when it's an adult it's sometimes more concerning."

Police are grateful to the public for their assistance.
