There was a big turnout for tennis great Andre Agassi when hundreds of fans showed up to meet him in Auckland today.

The Grand Slam winner was at Paper Plus Newmarket this morning, signing copies of his autobiography, Open.

The queue stretched onto the street and around the corner, with one man waiting more than 12 hours to meet his hero.

Ben Buist was the first in the queue, having travelled from Taranaki to meet Agassi.

He had slept outside the store to be first in line, arriving at 9pm last night.

Paper Plus' Lyle Hastings said the tennis star's timing was perfect after Auckland's busy summer of tennis.

"With the game front of mind for so many people, it's the perfect time to meet the tennis great and enjoy his autobiography."

Agassi's book topped the New York Times Best Seller list on its release in 2010.

Tonight he will be the guest of honour at a gala banquet at the Langham Hotel.

The evening event will include a three course dinner, a speech by Agassi, and a question and answer session with the player.

Agassi turned pro at 16 and was the first men's singles player to win all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal. Over his 20 year career he won 869 matches and earned 60 singles titles.
