Hidden money row leads to shooting
A South Auckland man accused of attempting to kill his ex-wife by shooting her in the head will stand trial.
Sione Vaioleti, 60, appeared in the Manukau District Court last week on charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Court documents said Vaioleti was living with his former wife in their house in Manukau with two of their six grown children, despite being divorced.
On June 16 last year police said he drove home after he had allegedly been drinking and walked into his ex-wife's room where she was asleep.
According to the court documents Vaioleti demanded a ''considerable'' amount of money she had hid in the room.
His ex-wife described him as being ''angry, drunk and frightening''.
Vaioleti allegedly accused the victim of hiding money from him and yelled at her: ''Tell me where the money is or I shot you [sic]'' and ''Tell me, if not I kill you''.
Police alleged that at that point Vaioleti punched his ex-wife in the head and face, fracturing her eye socket and leaving her face ''badly swollen''.
He then allegedly retrieved a pistol and put it to his ex-wife's head, saying ''I shoot you, I kill you'', before pulling the trigger.
The bullet passed through the woman's left hand and mouth, knocking out several teeth. The bullet also fractured her upper palate before becoming lodged in her head.
Police alleged Vaioleti left the house immediately, throwing the pistol over a neighbour's fence, before walking to Manukau Police Station where he told police, ''I shot my wife''.
Court documents also said he admitted shooting his ex-wife but in explaining his actions, said her ''tongue was sharp and she swore at him''.
The victim spent a month in Middlemore Hospital where she had to have the bullet surgically removed. She also had an operation on her left hand.
Vaioleti, who is in custody, will appear in the High Court in Auckland in March where a date will be set for his trial.
