Three people, including a 20-month-old child, had to be rescued by police after their boat ran aground near the Avondale river mouth over the weekend.
The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to their aid by police at 11.26am on Sunday but was unable to winch them out of the mud due to overhanging wires, a rescue helicopter spokeswoman said.
After locating the boat, she said rescue helicopter crew members spoke with those on-board the small launch to see what provisions they had to "ensure their safety".
The spokeswoman said because of the "power lines and soft landing surface" the helicopter called in police maritime staff who successfully rescued them.
