Teens claim police brutality
Teenagers are alleging police brutality after a 15-year-old girl was apparently left bloodied with her teeth knocked out in the wake of an out of control party in Howick.
A photo of Ella Mere Eketone was posted to the 3News Facebook page by Anna Gardiner. It shows her with a bleeding face and lip (warning this image is graphic).
Gardiner said that Eketone was pushed to the ground three times by police as she was leaving the property.
"Her front teeth got knocked out and she spent the night in Middlemore Hospital with a drip in her arm," she wrote on the page.
"What gives police the right to do this to an innocent teenage girl? Yes teenagers playup and get out of control at parties, we all know this but what gives the cops the right to enforce such violent actions on someone that wasn't doing anything wrong?"
Police have confirmed they are investigating the allegations.
Counties Manukau district commander Superintendent John Tims said the female alleged she was pushed by police.
The party drew about 500 people and took more than 40 officers to shut down. Tims said a police car was showered with about 50 bottles when it arrived about 11.15pm.
No arrests were made.
A complaint had been laid with the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
"We are speaking to witnesses and also all the police officers that were present at the Wellington St event to ascertain exactly what happened," Tims said.
