A woman spent at least nine hours in the Waitemata Harbour before being rescued about 1km off Takapuna Beach this morning.
The 23-year-old Birkdale woman was reported missing about 11pm last night but police and the Eagle helicopter could not find her last night.
The search resumed at 7.45am today and, on their second overhead sweep, she was spotted in the water by the Eagle crew 1km from Takapuna Beach, barely keeping her head above water.
The police launch Deodar took her to the Marine Rescue Centre and she was transferred to Auckland City Hospital.
An Eagle crew member said there were no buoys or marker posts within the immediate area that the young woman could have held on to.
"She was just in the middle of nothingness."
Detective Sergeant James Watson said the woman was expected to make a full recovery and would be assessed by psychiatric services.
