Fire fighters have contained a large suspicious scrub fire on a cliff face in Mahurangi West, near Auckland.
A helicopter with a monsoon bucket and crews from five fire brigades fought the two hectare blaze in Opahi Bay, about 50 kilometres north of Auckland.
Fire Service Northern communications shift commander Jaron Phillips said local residents called emergency services with reports of a large hillside fire about 7.30pm.
The fire was on a cliff face so was very difficult to access, he said.
"There are houses in the area which are being protected, but they are not under threat."
The blaze is being treated as suspicious, he said.
