A tunnel is being built near Auckland and AUT universities as part of construction work for a 1.9-kilometre cycleway extension.
NZ Transport Agency acting highways manager Steve Mutton said they were making the most of reduced traffic over Easter and Anzac Day holidays.
"The closures and restricted access will mean some congestion and delays, especially for people planning to attend Anzac Day commemoration services at the War Memorial Museum," Mutton said.
People should allow more time for travel and be patient, he said.
The new cycle path is an extension of the Northwestern Cycleway and is due to be completed in September.
Meanwhile, the Great North Rd on-ramp to the Northwestern Motorway will also be closed this weekend as part of another construction project.
NZTA say traffic delays will be heaviest on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
