The Auckland Theatre Company hopes to begin construction of Wynyard Quarter's Waterfront Theatre in August.
It has raised the $35 million needed for the new 600-seat complex, to be located on the corner of Halsey and Jellicoe streets, and is now finalising plans with the Auckland Council before it gets the green light.
Construction is expected to begin in August and it is hoped the theatre will open in 2016.
The theatre will become the permanent home of the company.
General manager Lester McGrath says the company received support from private and public benefactors for the project, including $10m from the Auckland Council which kick-started the fundraising campaign three years ago.
"We're thrilled that this dream is now becoming a reality and look forward to giving Auckland an international-standard theatre and arts complex."
