Green Shuttles find way to stay fit
Every Tuesday a love for badminton brings the Green Shuttles together at Mt Albert's YMCA.
The group was set up to help people keep fit and is an alternative to working out in a gym.
Auckland Badminton development manager Cliff Freeman says: "People come in and feel really welcome. There is no pressure, you can just be yourself."
Funding from Sport Auckland helped the group to hire a hall and buy equipment. The group now has a base of 18 players.
Chief fundraiser Leita Kearns loves coming down to the courts once a week to have a hit around.
"It doesn't matter how old or young you are, you just have to stand there and hit it and get some exercise."
Kearns was referred to the Green Prescription programme because she was giving up smoking.
"I was very short of breath and I needed exercise," she says.
"The programme has helped a heck of a lot. It helps to motivate us and it helps promote companionship."
To get involved with the Green Shuttles head down to the Mt Albert YMCA at 10am on a Tuesday. The cost is $5 a week or $3 if you are on Green Prescription.
