Organisers of the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays event have announced the charities to receive funding.

Ronald McDonald House, the Waitemata Harbour Clean-Up Trust and Fairfax First Books will all receive contributions. Families with sick children will know all too well the outstanding work done at Ronald McDonald House, where the trust has been supporting families since 1992. The trust raises the $3 million-plus it needs every year from partnerships and by fundraising, so that families from all over New Zealand can be with their children. The Waitemata Harbour Clean-Up Trust was formed in 2002 to oversee the removal of litter from the harbour and inner gulf islands. It promotes the concept of clean, clear rubbish-free waterways and staff scoop up everything from plastic wrap to tyres. Fairfax First Books was established by Fairfax Media – the organisers of the event – in 2006 to improve the reading levels of under-fives in disadvantaged communities and promote reading. Major Round the Bays sponsor Ports of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest container port by volume, handling more than 1600 ship calls. The run starts on Quay St and ends at St Heliers. This year’s event is on March 14 at 9.30am. Entry is $10 for children aged 16 and under and $15 for adults. To enter visit www.roundthe bays.co.nz.
