An education programme designed to reduce graffiti in Auckland has been started by the police and local councils.

Tag Free Kiwi is a new initiative of the Auckland Region Graffiti Free Project. Targeted at school students, the programme aims to encourage youth to take pride in themselves and their community by finding legitimate ways to express their creativity.

Tag Free Kiwi also hopes to raise awareness of the differences between graffiti vandalism and urban art through a series of local and overseas photographs and DVD presentations.

Police National Headquarters spokesman Gill Palmer says many students are unaware that graffiti vandalism is a crime.

Schools interested in the programme can contact Sergeant Deane McEntee on 5299127 for more information.

To report anonymous information regarding graffiti or any other matter, call the independent Crimestoppers line on 0800555111.
