Repairs costing thousands of dollars are needed to rectify the extreme vandalism at a Pt Chevalier toilet block.
The facility at Coyle Park was targeted overnight on August 17 and would have been destroyed if it had not been for heavy rain, police say.
A fire was set inside the block at the weekend and a number of fixtures were destroyed.
Police say the vandalism took place some time between 6pm last Friday and 9am the next morning.
"The reserve and toilet block are a well-used community facility and the block is likely to be closed for a significant period to enable repairs to be carried out," police say.
Auckland Council manager for local and sports parks Grant Muir says the facility was constructed in 2007 and cost the former Auckland City Council about $470,000.
‘The fixtures have been smashed in the men's changing room and there is some fire damage. Parks staff are assessing the damage and will get repairs under way as soon as possible."
Mr Muir says only the men's changing rooms and toilets have been affected. The women's facilities and the two unisex toilets are still open for use. "The nearest alternative toilet block is at Harbourview Reserve, just along the beach walkway from Coyle Park."
Albert-Eden Local Board chairman Peter Haynes says the mindless destruction of community property is much too prevalent.
"Such amenities cost a lot to build and any delays in replacing it will only inconvenience other people, so it's simply stupid and anti-social to do this. The message for the idiots who perpetrated this is that it's not really very clever at all. Grow up soon for all our sakes."
In 2008 the Auckland City Harbour News reported the construction costs of the toilet block hit $522,000 after delays and technical setbacks during building.
In February this year a one-of-kind toy train at Coyle Park, worth about $5000, was taken by thieves.
