Drivers are being asked to take extra care and expect delays after work at the northern end of the Waterview Connection project got under way this week.
Construction of the motorway tunnel's northern portal will begin next year and a schedule of enabling work needs to be done to prepare the area.
The work includes the staged removal of 96 NZ Transport Agency owned properties in north Waterview, relocating services and the construction of noise walls.
The part of Great North Rd that runs through Waterview has been realigned and narrowed slightly to allow for this. All lanes in both directions on the road will remain open throughout the Waterview Connection project but people should drive with caution and be prepared for delays at peak times, the agency says.
The new alignment will stay in place until the tunnel is complete in 2016. Work on the southern end of the link in Owairaka started in August.
