Master of the art
An "almost beyond belief" house has earned its builder an exclusive title.
The Herne Bay masterpiece built by WG de Gruchy Construction Limited is the Registered Master Builders House of the Year for the Auckland region.
Builder William de Gruchy is "rapt" with the win.
"It's the first time we've entered," he says.
"A lot of work goes into these things, not just by me, but by the team and the subcontractors. It's totally blown us away."
The two-storey house also won the Gold Award for the Westpac New Homes over $2 million category, Craftsmanship Award and the Outdoor Living Award.
It was designed by Hawke's Bay architect Andy Coltart and is in the Cape Cod style.
"It's pretty unique, you don't see that many houses like it in New Zealand and especially not in central Auckland city."
Most of the house's features are handcrafted including American oak timber floors, large sculptured wave-like fins around the skylight over the dining room, bunk beds in a children's room, desks, shelving, and mirrored cabinets.
Creating textured timber wall linings proved a challenge for the builder of 13 years and his team.
"It's just the level of detail. There is no hiding anything, you can't fill in holes and things, everything is on show."
The project started out as a renovation of an existing house, but turned into a complete rebuild.
"In the end the design team and the owners just decided to start afresh," he says.
Competition judges say the degree of difficulty the builders faced to pull off the project is the reason they scooped the award.
"The exacting standards and incredible attention to detail displayed in this home is almost beyond belief. The exterior timber cladding, timber windows and extensive use of textured timber wall linings internally were all crafted perfectly.
"This is one of those exceptional homes that you seldom see - this is building excellence and a worthy winner of the Supreme Award."
The house is now in the running for national awards including overall house of the year which will be announced in September and November.
Construction started in September 2011 and took until January this year.
New Windsor-based WG de Gruchy Construction Limited has been operating for four years and specialises in high-end residential homes.
The Auckland Region Registered Master Builders 2013 Renovation of the Year award went to Barton Builders Limited for a home in Westmere. A number of homes in Herne Bay, St Marys Bay, Grey Lynn and Westmere won other awards.
