Work is under way to transform the gaping hole in Ponsonby's streetscape.

Initial site works for Progressive Enterprises' $200 million shopping, apartment and office precinct officially started last week on the site once known as Soho Square.

It will become a commercial and residential quarter called Vinegar Lane.

A new Countdown, five levels of basement parking and three levels of offices, to be called the Cider Building, will be built in stage two of the project in early 2014.

It is expected some initial infrastructure works will be under way before the year is out, Progressive Enterprises property general manager Adrian Walker says.

"We've worked very hard to design a development that is befitting of this iconic part of Auckland and have worked closely with the council and community to put our consent and design plans together."

The company bought the section between Pollen St, Crummer Rd and Williamson Ave in 2011 after a $250m development project was abandoned in 2009.

The development includes two resource consents for tree removals, an Auckland Council spokesman says.

Five willow myrtle trees will be removed from Crummer Rd to make way for underground servicing of power lines and a new road entrance.

Williamson Ave will lose three puriri and a Queensland box tree to allow for road widening.

"The conditions of consent require that a detailed landscaping scheme be approved and implemented including substantial mitigation for the removed trees," the spokesman says.

About 12 new large trees will be planted along Crummer Rd, Williamson Ave and Pollen St. The exact specimens are yet to be decided.

They will be planted after "substantial progress" has been made to the development.
