Cheers! Festival begins
Wine will be flowing and tastebuds kicked into overdrive during a nine-day harvest celebration that is offering more than 50 events in the first Waiheke Vintage Festival.
The event was launched last night at The Goldie Room and organisers are looking forward to a busy time.
The festival officially starts this Saturday and runs until April 6 - bringing together members of the Waiheke Winegrowers Association to showcase their boutique industry during harvest time.
Celebratory events will be held at 17 vineyards and several will be free.
Attendees will have a range of experiences including wine tastings, blending sessions, music and opera degustation dinners.
Winegrowers Association spokeswoman Jenny Holmes says the industry is thrilled to be putting it on.
"The fact they are opening their doors at what is their busiest time of year, at harvest, is quite amazing.
"People should take advantage of this opportunity to be part of the buzz. It's for nine days only and these special events won't be available year-round."
See our Waiheke Vintage Festival feature on page 8 for a chance to win a dinner evening for two at Casita Miro.
A loop bus will operate every day during the festival from 9am till 5pm. The adult fare is $14 and allows visitors to get on and off as many times as they like.
The ticket can also be used on the regular bus service.
