Telecom says it has now fixed a problem that knocked half its broadband customers - a quarter of the country's broadband users - offline for more than three hours this morning. 

Spokeswoman Jo Jalfon said the problem arose "early today" during planned maintenance on a broadband server.

"The issue was quickly identified and our technicians have been working over the past three hours to resume connectivity," she said.

But the company said that if any customers were still having trouble connecting to the internet, they should turn their modem off and then on again, or call 123 for assistance. 

Retail head Chris Quin said the problem appeared to start at about 7am. Telecom has apologised.
